Prison redevelopment tenders sought

PrisonTENDERS are being sought for the multi million Euro redevelopment of Limerick Prison on Mulgrave Street as the facility looks to increase capacity.

The committal prison for Limerick, Clare and Tipperary is looking to add 100 male cells and 50 female cells  in separate blocks at the prison.

Last week, the tender process was launched where works are to include the installation of new additions for catering, laundry, education rooms as well as facilities for staff and spaces for 200 cars.

At present, up to 50 prisoners “slop out” every day in the older wings of the prison and the revamp is set to provide in cell sanitation.

The prison, last week, was at full capacity with 220 male prisoners in custody and 30 females in a separate wing.
