Early Christmas present for Limerick traders

-

images-1LIMERICK City and County Council have rolled out a new parking initiative in an effort to encourage people to shop in their local urban centre this Christmas.

The initiative hopes to encourage shoppers to come into Limerick City Centre, Newcastlewest, Abbeyfeale and Kilmallock on Friday mornings during December.

Local authority Transportation Director Paul Crowe, said motorists will not have to display parking discs up to 12 noon on Friday mornings in the city centre, Newcastlewest, Abbeyfeale and Kilmallock.

“Of course, this does not mean that they can park illegally, for example on double yellow lines. We have engaged with traders and want to be as helpful as possible during this traditional shopping period,” he added.

The initiative continues each Friday up to December 27. Vehicles will be obliged to display a parking disc from 12 noon onwards and motorists must continue to park legally.

Mayor Kathleen Leddin, and County Cathaoirleach  John Sheahan, welcomed the initiative. “We must support our local shops and retail outlets and, by allowing free on-street parking on Friday mornings in December, the local authority is taking a proactive measure to encourage people to do this,” they said in a joint statement.
