A LIMERICK man has been extradited from Bulgaria to face charges of threatening to kill a witness during a major criminal trial in the city.

Vincent Collopy (35)  of St Ita’s Street, St Mary’s Park was arrested ten days ago on foot of a European Arrest Warrant issued in 2011.

He faces two charges of threatening to kill Willie Moran and intimidating a witness.

Detective Sergeant Ronan McDonagh of Henry Street Garda station told Judge Eugene O’Kelly at Limerick District Court that Collopy made no reply to the charges when they were put to him.

Defence solicitor John Devane said his client was arrested in the early hours of Tuesday morning and applied for free legal aid.

“It’s a serious matter and I can tell the court that my client is only back in Limerick since 3am after being extradited from Bulgaria.”

Mr Devane was assigned under the legal aid system and notified the court that his client was reserving his position in relation to an application for bail.

Sgt Paul Whelan said that the DPP directed the matter proceed by way of trial on indictment and Judge O’Kelly adjourned case until next Tuesday.
