LIMERICK composer Fiona Linnane, who created the music to Mary Coll’s epic ‘spirestone’ for performance by Limerick Choral Union and Choir, has composed a new piece, ‘Le Rugby’ for string quartet and referee.
‘Le Rugby’ was treated to workshop and performance by the Coull Quartet at University of Ulster and aired at Derry’s Walled City Music Festival for the Sound of Sport weekend.
According to Linnane, “The piece links each instrument in the quartet to a position on a rugby team – the cello representing the prop, viola as the hooker etc – and musically summarises a rugby match complete with scrums, line outs and, of course, the push for a try.”
