THERE’S no doubt that art can yield food for the soul.

However, City of Culture has also proved that it can provide sustenance for those who need it most too.

Ahead of the giant granny’s visit to Limerick earlier this month, onlookers were left perplexed to witness the very peculiar sight of a bus full of spuds driving around the city.

As it turns out, this unusual vision was not some bizarre vegetable hijacking but an avant-garde statement of art.

The four tonne busload of potatoes were all part of the Royal De Luxe “Grandmother’s Journey’ pageant. And now that the mischievous pensioner has departed after a weekend of flatulence and public-urination, Limerick’s largest homeless provider have been gifted with the makings of enough chips, mash and roasties to feed a small army.

Thanks to granny’s generosity, Novas Initiatives were fortunate to receive an amount of potatoes to distribute to its three residential facilities in the city at Dial House, McGarry House and Brother Stephen Russell House and to support the families engaged in its Intensive Family Support Service.

VdSAUK4Volunteer co-ordinator of Novas’ Street Outreach Programme, Sinead Carey was thrilled with the donation. She commented, “After such a marvellous weekend in Limerick it is great to see the goodwill of the giant granny living on.”

“Any donation we receive allows us to support more people, so we’re obviously delighted with the gift. It was a lovely ending to a wonderful weekend of celebrations in Limerick,” said Sinead.

Granny may be gone but with tonnes of root vegetable now being put to good use at Novas Initiatives’ centres in the city, she will be remembered at meal times in Limerick for a time to come.
