COMEDIAN Andrew Stanley has performed in Limerick numerous times in fact his first paying gig many years ago was in Dolan’s at a comedy club run by Keith Piggott the UL student union president who did much to put the city on the comedy circuit in the early noughties.
You will know Andrew Stanley as that guy in the AIG Insurance adverts in the bathrobe, thus the name of his current Tour ‘Andrew Stanley Unrobed’. He has made seven adverts in the last three years for the Insurance company and admits that he is “recognised a lot more” on the streets these days
For one of the ads he gets to meet four rugby players from All-Blacks, their kit is also sponsored by AIG.
“A lot of women were jealous of me managing to grope Richie McCaw’s chest or touch Liam Messam’s lips,” laughs Andrew.
“None of that was in the script at all. The director was just going to me, ‘Do some weird stuff to the players. But I’m not going to tell them you are going to do it.’”
That led to Andrew groping the clearly embarrassed players. It got the necessary laughs, and as Andrew says though they are employed to be the strongest men in the world they saw the funny side of the story and didn’t punch him in the face.
Andrew is just back from a US tour with Joe Rooney and Mundy. He tells Limerick Post that he has spent the last few weeks, “trying to slow down my accent so people can understand me.”
Looking forward to his Limerick headliner gig, Andrew remembers when he brought a stage version of his RTE TV show ‘I Dare You’ to the city.
“We dared all the male members of the audience to go the shop next door and buy “ladies monthly devices” for all the girls in the audience. It was probably pretty weird for the night workers in the shop that night when 60 men marched over to queue up to buy all the tampons the shop had in stock.”
Andrew Stanley is on stage at Dolan’s on Saturday November 15.
