Emergency operation at Limerick bridge and river

A MAJOR water and riverbank emergency search operation was enacted on Friday night when a male was seen entering the water from one of the city’s bridges in Limerick.

The middle-aged man was seen leaving the bridge around 8pm and the emergency services were immediately scrambled to the scene.

Gardai and swift water swimmers from Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service were on site within minutes where a search for the man immediately for underway. Officers and emergency personnel were deployed to Arthur’s Quay, Clancy Strand and also to the Sarsfield and Shannon bridges.

Limerick Marine Search and Rescue deployed underwater divers while the Shannon based Coast Guard rescue helicopter provided air assistance to the operation.

The man, understood to be in his 50s, was seen entering the water at Thomond Bridge shortly after 8pm.

Search crews are to resume operations and will be joined by local coast guard operations including a crew from Killaloe.
