INDEPENDENT councillor Jerome Scanlan has called for Limerick Council to trial average speed cameras along the R520 and R522. Cllr Scanlan took the view that their findings are needed in the interest of safety.
In response, Director of Transportation Patricia Liddy said that the use of average speed cameras is particularly effective on high speed, low conflict roads such as motorways, national roads and tunnels.
“The use of average speed cameras is less effective where there are frequent junctions or accesses and therefore is not suitable for much of the regional road network. Furthermore, the upfront costs for this form of speed reduction mechanism is significant — €150k to €250k,” she said.
