LOCK your car while driving and if you think you are being followed, don’t drive home but go to your nearest Garda station.

That’s the advice being given to lone women drivers after the theft of a handbag from a car in Limerick prompted Gardaí to issue the warning.

The incident occurred last Tuesday at The Laurels off the Dooradoyle Road when a woman driver was followed by another vehicle from a local shop to her home.

As she parked outside her house, a man opened the passenger door and told her that one of the back lights in her was not working. Having created this distraction, he then grabbed a handbag on the floor by the front passenger seat and escaped with bag and contents.

The thief is described as being aged in his early 20s, wearing a grey “hoodie”, of stocky build, unshaven and well spoken.

Gardaí say that people arriving home with shopping can also be vulnerable while entering their homes in terms of leaving bags, purses or wallets exposed either in the car or inside the hall doors.

“If you think you are being followed, don’t drive to your home but to the closest Garda Station. If there’s no Garda Station nearby, drive to a well-lit area perhaps a garage forecourt and use the car horn to attract attention”, the Garda spokesman said.
