MAYOR of Limerick, Cllr Kevin Sheahan has described as “shameful” the verbal abuse targeted by anti water charges protesters recently at President Michael D Higgins.

The 73-year-old was taunted by protesters and called a “traitor”, “sell-out” and a “little midget parasite” in Dublin last week.

Condemning the verbal attack, Mayor Sheahan said:”President Higgins is a Freeman of Limerick and I am of the firm belief that people need to show the respect to his office that it constitutionally deserves.

“I would appeal to those who have used unsavoury language when referring to him to desist immediately. The President has a superb record of supporting human rights and the minority who choose to refer to him in a derogatory manner are nothing short of disgraceful,” he said.
