ANITA Reeves is back on stage here following last year’s ‘Halcyon Days’ which won an Edinburgh Fringe First Award. Four years ago she spent several nights in Limerick with her current show, ‘Little Gem’ which was and is a smash hit.

Courtesy of collaboration between then director Paul Meade, promoter Richard Ryan and Limerick Regeneration, this comedy of generations packed out Corpus Christi Hall and made for an exceptional night for this acclaimed actress.

“I always remember Moyross for being special, that feeling of privilege that people who don’t usually have a chance to see a play being so appreciative”.  Yes, indeed. We lapped it up and ovated and please holy God, ‘Little Gem’ will pull the same reaction at Lime Tree Theatre on Wednesday April 1 and Thursday 2, 8pm shows.

This Dubliner is as fond as ever of Kay, her role as mother to actor Hilda Fay and Granny to Kate Gilmore. This bright, bright play is now directed by its writer Elaine Murphy.

“Every so often a part comes along that fits like a glove and you can’t not be in it. Last time around I was a little young for Kay but now I’m the right age. ‘Little Gem’ is about a grandmother, mother, daughter, a year in their lives and there is a big issue in each of their lives”.

The dynamic is about these knots gentling and their relationship with each other coming on.

Empathy, comedic timing and that mysterious alchemy between actors and audience are dear to Reeve’s (big) heart. She looks to bring audience response with her each and every night.

The writing matters, the director matters: “You know it’s a really good play when the actors don’t get bored with it”.

She delights in being led by Murphy and admits, “All the spadework has been done since the last production but we are lucky to get her insight”.

Limerick will be lucky to get exposure to Little Gem’s  magic, the chortles, the exceptional quality these ordinary but extraordinary characters bring to life.
