IRISH Chamber Orchestra’s concert on Friday April 10 in University Concert Hall will feature American soprano Claron McFaddon, a Grammy nominee. Winner of the Amsterdam Prize for the Arts, she is integral to a programme led by principal partner/ guest conductor Jorg Widmann that will feature Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture and Mendelssohn’s Reformation Symphony No. 5.

Mendelssohn’s obsession with Bach’s counterpoint inspired Widmann’s own Attempt at a Fugue for Soprano & Orchestra.  The Irish Chamber Orchestra and Stuttgarter Kammerorchester have jointly commissioned the world premiere of the re-writing of this work, performed by the ICO with McFaddon.

Mozart’s C Fugue was first composed for two pianos but re-arranged for strings, with an introductory Adagio reminiscent of a French overture.

In Sphinx’s Sayings and Riddle Canons, the particularly playful handling of sonority meets an almost rigid structure as McFadden’s humming alongside the clarinet and knocking sounds of Gilles Vonsattel on piano become indistinguishable.

Mozart’s Don Giovanni Overture is renowned for its grand opening which counter-balances the powerful symphonic close of Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 5 (Reformation), the heart of the programme.
