Jan to get Limerick kids running

GLR Kids Run Launch 068 (1)EDUCATION Minister Jan O’Sullivan TD will fire the starting gun this Saturday in the largest children’s run in the country to be held at the University of Limerick.

The children’s ‘UL Sport Run for Fun’ has been increased to accommodate 3,000 children and the event has so far raised over €50,000 for those primary schools with participating children.

Children aged between 4 and 12 years will compete over various race distances around the University campus with all participants receiving a race t-shirt and race medal. The event has proven extremely popular and participant numbers have grown from 1,200 children in 2013 to 3,000 in 2015.

Minister O’Sullivan believes that with childhood obesity an ever remaining challenge events such as the UL Sport ‘kids run for fun’ provide an ideal opportunity to encourage physical activity and exercise at an early age while simultaneously promoting healthy eating.

The UL Sport Children’s run is now an integral part of the Barrington’s Hospital Great Limerick Run which will take place this Sunday, May 3 with a combined total of 13,000 now taking part.
