CITY West councillor Malachy McCreesh has called on local government Ministers and TDs to enact legislation to deal effectively and finally with low and zero hour contracts. The Sinn Fein representative stated that thousands of workers are caught in a trap, exploited and tethered to contracts which only provide minimal hours and uncertain pay from week to week. “The Government’s Low Pay Commission is ineffective, and the proposed collective bargaining legislation is way off the mark in terms of what is urgently needed to address this problem. This is unacceptable, especially on the part of the Labour Party,” said Cllr McCreesh, speaking in support of workers at Dunnes Stores.
