ANTI Austerity Alliance councillor Cian Prendiville sees the historic no vote in last week’s referendum in Greece as the most significant political event since the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

The City North representative predicts it may signal a reversal of the trend of victories of neo-liberalism and austerity in the interests of the one per cent, giving hope to millions across Europe and indeed around the world.

“The massive no vote was achieved against the backdrop of an unprecedented campaign of terror – with its proponents stretching from the European Central Bank, the European Commission, the IMF, the German government and other governments including the Irish, to the private media here, which have been entirely biased,” claimed Cllr Prendiville.

The Limerick politician is of the view that The Troika should recognise that they cannot force more austerity on a people which has already been impoverished and withdraw their attacks. Democracy, he said, must be respected and the financial terror should stop.

“The Greek people in rejecting austerity despite all of that pressure have struck a mighty blow for the 99 per cent across Europe. We must be prepared to respond as necessary to support them now – with big mobilisations across Europe in the event of further economic and financial terror from the European elites.”
