THERE will be blazing saddles in Killaloe on Saturday, August 29 – saddles of lamb, that is, when Flanagan’s on the Lake will host the Ring of Lough Derg barbecue competition in conjunction with the Irish BBQ Association.

More than 30 national and international teams have already confirmed their participation in this year’s competition with more entries anticipated. The Battle of the Grill is expected to be sizzling as the winners will be sent forward to represent Ireland in next year’s European Championships.

Teams will be turning up the heat in pursuit of the Fulacht Fia Cup with each team flaming things up as they are given a grill, the meats and utensils to cook up a storm and they can choose to rub, marinate or mop their entry and season it with whatever herbs and spices inspire them.

Judges will be scoring the entries based on three main considerations; appearance, taste and texture/tenderness, with taste carrying the most marks. Cash prizes being presented on the day total €1,100 with €500 going to the Grand Champion.

Cathal Quinn of Flanagan’s on the Lake is looking forward to hosting the competition now in its sixth year, “I am delighted to see so many teams interested in this years event. It proves that The Ring of Lough Derg Festival is firmly on the Irish culinary map for both chefs and patrons alike”.

There will be a first, second and third prize in each of the three categories along with some novelty awards for ‘Best Dressed Stand’ ‘Squeaky Clean Hygiene’ and ‘Happiest Home’.

The barbecue sauce category a stand-alone novelty category will be judged on its own merits, the only rule is it must taste good and be whiskey inspired.

With free entry for spectators, the event promises not only to be a culinary experience not to be missed but also fun for all the family with local food producers showcasing their products and lots of family fun with live entertainment throughout the day.
