A MAJOR clean-up of the back field in St Mary’s Park will be funded by the Government at a cost of €750,000.

“This will come as an enormous relief to the people of St Mary’s Park especially those who lived close to the dump area and who desperately wanted to have the entire area cleaned”, said local Sinn Féin City North councillor Maurice Quinlivan who added that the area was subjected to illegal dumping over a long number of years.

“A number of disreputable refuse collectors as well as some domestic users dumped rubbish there for years. The allocation of funding means a clean-up should be finished during the summer and with the enhanced CCTV systems we now have in place, dumping on that scale should never happen again”, he said.

Local residents along St. Munchin’s Street have been issued with ultrasonic rodent repellents to ensure that rodents disturbed by the clean-up will not enter their homes.
