Workplace accident fatality named as local publican

gardai greyTHE man who died as a result of a workplace accident at a garage in outside Limerick on Wednesday night has been named locally as a 60-year-old John Ahern.

Mr Ahern’s body was discovered at a garage at the rear of a public house on the Newport Road, near Annagh on the Limerick Tipperary border.

The alarm was raised shortly after 9:30pm and Gardai together with appliances from the Limerick Fire and Rescue Service and emergency paramedics were called to the scene at a commercial garage near Aherns bar on the Newport Road.

The workplace accident is thought to have occurred earlier on Wednesday evening when the cab of a truck fell on Mr Ahern when he was working in the garage where trucks, tractors and other commercial vehicles are serviced and repaired. Mr Ahern, also owned the nearby public house it is understood.

A garda investigation has been launched and the HSA have also been notified.

The scene was cordoned off as initial investigations get underway.

The remains of Mr Ahern were kept at the scene for a period at the scene, but have been removed and taken to the University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will be carried out.
