GAA – Club Football championships take centre stage

Football Cup 10THE Irish Wire Products Ltd county senior football championship quarter finals take place this weekend as Ballylanders take on Fr Casey’s and Ballysteen face off against Monaleen.
Ballylanders reached the quater final stage with three wins from their five group games. Wins over Monaleen, St Patrick’s and Rathkeale showed that the county side can rattle up some massive scores, while losses to table topping Dromcollogher/ Broadford and the round one loss to Pallasgreen can be put down to early season inconsistency.
Fr Casey’s qualified from group two with Adare, Ballysteen and St Kieran’s. Indeed the 2-11 to 1-6 win over Kieran’s in the last round of group games secured their spot over Na Piarsaigh who also finished on six points.
In the second quarter final, Ballysteen, also from Group two will take on Monaleen, of group one and the City Division’s only representative in the final stages of the competition.
Ballysteen enter the quarter finals as the leading scorers in the group stage, something that could see them through this weekend’s game.  Monaleen, who are also going well in the Premier Intermediate club hurling championship, will take on Ballysteen buoyed by their performances in Group one, where they boasted one of the better defences in the competition. Both games are too tight to call this weekend and with Newcastlewest and Dromcollogher/ Broadford waiting in the wings, the championship is really hotting up, even if the match conditions won’t be.
