A FLOATING pontoon at the back of the Curragower Boat Club where the Abey River joins the main body of the River Shannon, broke free from its anchor moorings this Wednesday lunchtime as the fast moving current showed visible signs of an increase in flow rate.

Shortly Before 1pm this Wednesday, crews from the Limerick City Fire and Rescue were alerted to the incident when the floating pontoon broke free from its mooring chain and anchors. The pontoon is located at the city weir across the width of the Abbey River and adjacent to the City Marina behind the Hunt Museum.

A crew of firefighters secured the concrete structure with a temporary anchor but further damage assessment will be required before the pontoon can be repositioned.
