THE four natural design differences between a woman and a man are at the centre of a new interdisciplinary performance piece using the tools of theatre, dance and music.

Focusing on the themes of Processing, Chemistry, Structure and Thought, (Specifically. Being. Human.) is the brainchild of dance artist Angela Smalis, composer/producer Paddy Mulcahy and actor/ choreographer Kevin Kiely Jnr.

The back left corner of the warehouse at Limerick City Build at Bank Place is being turned into a representation of a glass box/ boxing ring. We the audience are invited to witness what is to happen once a man and a woman decide to be inside the space.

(Specifically. Being. Human.) runs nightly at 8pm from Thursday February 25  at 8pm to Sunday 28. There is an additional Saturday 27 performance at 4pm, tickets from O’Mahoney’s Booksellers, O’Connell Street.

“My personal artistic practice finds a life within collaborative and multidisciplinary projects that allow the tools I have gathered as a dancer and choreographer to explore further the possibilities live performance has,” observed Angie Smalis, who is The Woman in the show.

Noting the site specific nature of the work, Kevin Kiely Jnr of IsleBoro Productions and The Man of this piece, credits property owner Ray O’Halloran for seeing the potential of the team.

“Theatre is a collaborative effort all around,” Kiely Jnr added, “and I look forward to the audience of (Specifically. Being. Human.) playing their part in bringing their concentration and focus into the warehouse with them. I am excited to be exploring the fringes and the supposed boundaries of theatre’s potential.

“I want my audiences to think outside the box, while watching what is happening inside of one.”

Another Limerick man, Paddy Mulcahy, is composer and co-producer and will be visible to the audience for (Specifically. Being. Human.). His soundtrack to the recent Dance Limerick based show ‘Linger’ was impressive work, complementing concept and choreography.

He has created a soundscape through keyboards and synthesizer.

“Working on dance theatre collaboration is great, because more often than not, you’re given lots of creative freedom and the chance to interpret whatever show it is in your own way.”
