SET up by the LSAD educated Andrew Flynn, Decadent Theatre Company operates out of Galway. It’s a familiar and formidable company on the road with a history of knock-out productions.
The latest ticket is ‘The Weir’ by Conor McPherson. Decadent is notable for espousing Irish plays and got a hectic run out of Martin McDonagh’s bloody Leenane Trilogy. ‘The Pillowtown’ did acclaimed rounds earlier this year.
When McPherson staged ‘The Weir’ in London 20 years ago, it scooped the hottest prizes – Olivier, the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards for Best New Play.
Andrew Flynn was in the audience and hungered for this work since. He then went on to stage half a dozen others by the playwright over the years
Now Flynn has pulled together funding from venues (a weighty endorsement in itself) and a cast of household names for this story of a Leitrim village stirred when a beautiful stranger arrives in their midst.
Gary Lydon, Garrett Keogh, Frankie McCafferty, Janet Moran and Limerick actor Patrick Ryan play out the night storytelling in a bar.
‘The Weir’ will preview at Lime Tree Theatre on Thursday June 16 and Friday 17 at 8pm.
For this producer/ director, “It goes back to the beginning of storytelling and great characters. This play is very much a part of rural Ireland and Irish men. It’s beautiful, beautiful, a story with a great heart.
“There’s no swordfighting, no theatricality. ‘The Weir’ is simple and subtle but the magic is in the script and having a really good cast.
“They want the truth of the play and to serve Conor’s work as best they can. It’s worth their while to investigate the play and what is going on”.
Next week this national tour sees its first light here in Limerick.
