Limerick’s bid to become European Capital of Culture 2020 steps up a gear this week with the first deadline of the second round of the competition being met.
And the city and our bid will feature on a special edition on Nationwide on RTE 1 this Wednesday at 7pm.
This Friday, June 17th the Limerick 2020 team will submit the second bid book for consideration by the European jury.
Limerick’s 2020 bid is creating a great buzz across Limerick and an air of expectation can be felt before the arrival of the jury to the city on Tuesday July 12th.
Limerick 2020 Deputy Director Shelia Deegan is encouraging citizens of Limerick to get behind the bid:
“It’s a very exciting time for Limerick and the potential of winning this designation would utterly transform how culture is enjoyed and delivered in the future. The judges will be visiting the city on Tuesday July 12th and we’re hoping everyone can show their support for Limerick 2020 by coming out and enjoying all the events on offer on the day which will be announced shortly. It will be our time to shine, to show our home, our place to Europe. If you would like to volunteer to be part of that day, then please do let us know.”
This Friday is a big day for one of the Limerick 2020 projects as the Northside Misfits Community Drama Group travels from Moyross to Manchester.
The group will learn about the behind the scenes preparations for the Manchester Day Parade from Walk the Plank as well as taking in the parade and tweeting live photos from @limerick2020 on Sunday June 19th.
Walk the Plank, who specialise in outdoor performance and artwork, visited Limerick in March to see the work of local groups and check out the city as part of the bid process. The Limerick 2020 team is working collaboratively with Walk the Plank and Limerick based aerial dance group Fidget Feet to design a flagship project called Lifting the Siege
“We feel honoured to have been given this great opportunity to see the Manchester Day Parade. We just can’t wait and hope that we do ourselves and Limerick proud,” said Stephanie Ryan, from Northside Misfits.
