A PROTEST organised by the Anti Austerity Alliance greeted Junior Housing Minister, Damien English when he arrived in Limerick to address local representatives on the Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan on Wednesday afternoon.

The protesters were demanding that the government drop their appeal against the Apple tax judgment and invest it in housing.

“The €13 billion, plus interest, now due to the Irish State by Apple is more than enough to build a house for each and every person on the housing waiting list,” said AAA councillor Cian Prendiville.

The protest also demand that the government introduce rent controls. “Here in Limerick rents have gone up more than 15% in the last year alone. Nationally rents are even higher than in the Celtic Tiger years, while incomes stagnate. In the government’s housing plan they have completely ruled out rent controls,” he said.
