EACH year Limerick Post opens its doors for December to take in goods and gifts donated by the people of Limerick for ADAPT Domestic Abuse Services. Located in Rosbrien, ADAPT House works 24/7 and 365 days a year for women experiencing domestic abuse, and their children u18s.

With 14 apartments on site and access to transition housing, this charity offers emergency refuge, Outreach support, counselling and legal and educational support for families troubled by emotional, physical, sexual and/ or financially abusive relationships.

Limerick Post is not looking for money – contact ADAPT directly if that prospect interests you. We want toys (educational and construction ideal), toiletries, bed linen, nightwear, clothes for children and teens; also a gift under the tree for the mums, if you can.

From Majella Foley-Friel, who works in training and development with the organisation:

“The ADAPT Christmas Appeal which the Limerick Post has run for us over the last number of years makes a huge difference. Women who have cried salty tears because they can’t afford Santa are told by an Outreach worker that we can give them brand new toys and not just toys for the children, but also food.

“When the Outreach worker calls after Christmas, these children delight in showing her the toys Santa brought.

“Workers in the refuge say Christmas Eve is a wonderful time – helping to get the children ready for bed, giving the toys to the mothers for Christmas night. The atmosphere is full of anticipation and Christmas morning is magical.

“We welcome all new gifts and gifts for older boys and girls are particularly welcome. If we don’t use those in December, children have birthdays during the year and those occasions are important to mark too”.

Another way to help is buy ADAPT’s Christmas cards from their charity shop at Sarsfield Street, €6 for 10 cards and two packs for €10.

“This newspaper’s annual appeal to our readers and the Limerick community is important to us, especially at this time of year. Christmas and the holidays are a challenging time,” observes Limerick Post managing director Will Ryan.

“We want to thank everyone who has given goods and thought to boosting families who have sought help and refuge from their home”.
