Son charged with false imprisonment of Limerick father

James O’Connor appeared at Limerick District Court

A LIMERICK man is to seek bail next Tuesday after he was charged with the alleged false imprisonment of his 80-year-old father for two weeks and for the alleged theft of more than €8,000 in pension money and Credit Union deposits.

James O’Connor, who turns 40 this Saturday, was arrested on June 8 last at 20 Lord Edward Street in the city.

On June 9, following a period of detention and questioning, the accused was charged with eight counts of theft and one count of false imprisonment by Detective Garda Brian Culbert of Roxboro Road Garda Station.

It is the State’s case that Mr O’Connor stole five pension payments from a Post Office account and three amounts from a Credit Union account.

It is also alleged that between May 19 and June 2, James O’Connor falsely imprisoned his father, within the State but against his will.

The accused made no reply to any of the nine charges put before Limerick District Court when he was given copies.

Legal Aid defence solicitor Darach McCarthy was assigned to represent the accused who would be making a bail application next Tuesday.

Dressed in a black t-shirt with “Sail Smooth” emblazoned across the chest, James O’Connor stood silent in the custody area of Limerick District Court as Judge Marian O’Leary remanded him in custody pending next Tuesday’s bail application.

Mr McCarthy asked the court that the accused would receive medical treatment for asthma and an arthritic condition while in custody of Limerick Prison.
