Limerick TD and Labour Party Housing Spokesperson Jan OโSullivan says Limerick has once again been forgotten about in the Governments rebranded first time buyers scheme.
Speaking after the announcement by the Housing Minister, Limerick TD OโSullivan said:
โAs with exclusion from the rent pressure zones, it is clear that Limerick is once again at the back of the bus. Under the new scheme, a person or couple can borrow up to 90% of the value of a new, second-hand or self-build home to a maximum of โฌ320,000 in the Greater Dublin area, Cork and Galway area and up to โฌ250,000 in the rest of the country, which includes Limerick..โ
โAverage house prices in many suburbs of Limerick are higher than โฌ250,000 and the failure of the scheme to actually build affordable housing and at the very least include Limerick as a major city will continue to price hard working people out of the market.โ
Deputy OโSullivan continued: โThe Government needs to pro-actively build affordable housing and this scheme amounts to little more than a PR exercise. The Labour Party has consistently argued for NAMA to be turned into a financier, and direct builder of affordable housing for sale or rent, using the expertise already in situ there, and in the Housing Agency and Housing Finance Agency.
