Shannon statue to commemorate Axel

RUGBY hero, Anthony ‘Axel’ Foley has been commemorated in a sculpture that occupies a place of honour in Shannon Rugby Club pavilion in the shadow of the main stand at Thomond Park.

The bust is the work of West Clare artist Seamus Connolly, who was approached by the club to create the memorial for the Killaloe man, who died suddenly in Paris in October 2016.

A copy of the original bust was also presented to Anthony’s secondary school St Munchin’s College on behalf of Shannon RFC.

A presentation was also made on the night of the unveiling of the bust to the people of Killaloe, who were thanked by members of his former rugby club for their support to the Foley family.

A portrait of the former Munster and Ireland Number 8 will now hang in Reddan’s Bar on the Main Street in Killaloe.

The portrait of the rugby legend was presented to Pat Reddan from Killaloe as “a thank you for the manner in which he and the people of the East Clare were so kind and understanding to the Foley family, us in Shannon and indeed the greater rugby community during the days around the burial,” a spokesman for the club said.
