Stabbing death could be linked to extended family feud

GARDA investigations are continuing into the fatal stabbing of a Limerick man outside a nightclub in Shannon on St Patrick’s night.

Talented soccer player Jamie Higgins (23), was killed following an altercation outside the Shannon Knights in the early hours of March 18 and is being laid to rest this Thursday.

A young man arrested in the aftermath was released without charge but Gardaí believe that one of the suspects previously posted taunts on social media.

Jamie Higgins suffered fatal stab wounds after a fight that had been broken up was reignited.

A post mortem examination carried out at the University Hospital Limerick found that Jamie died from fatal stab wounds, despite the best efforts of bar staff, Gardaí and paramedics to revive him at the scene.

Gardai are now investigating links with a non-criminal feud between Limerick families known to each other and others who became involved in the dispute.

It is understood that the only reason the parties were in Shannon was in a bid to avoid each other in Limerick city.

Gardai now believe that a row broke out earlier but the parties returned again and during this later altercation outside the nightclub, Jamie Higgins was fatally stabbed.

Extensive CCTV footage is now being reviewed by investigating officers with units in Limerick providing assistance to their Clare-based colleagues.

This week, tributes were being paid to Jamie Higgins who was being remembered through his sporting associations in both rugby and soccer.

Pike Rovers FC said that “it is with great sadness that we learned of the untimely passing of former schoolboy star Jamie Higgins.

“Jamie starred in the Hoops for many years and won numerous underage trophies. Our sincere and deepest sympathies go out to his family at this very sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a h’anam”, the club posted to social media.

Jamie Higgins is survived by his parents, Sharon and Liam; partner, Jade; son, Jay; sister Leanne; brothers Calvin and Scott.
