Working up an appetite for Limerick Street Feast

AN ‘al fresco’ dining street feast will prove a tasty treat from visitors to the city on Sunday, June 10 as Catherine Street has been selected to hold a family friendly community “street feast”.

The event, supported by Liveable Limerick, invites members of the Limerick City community to connect and reconnect with their neighbours and celebrate the vibrancy of Limerick City in a free family-friendly day.

The idea to facilitate a public picnic is a workable proposal to get the community utilising the public street space, according to the organisers.

Niki McMahon, Liveable Limerick said, “We are inviting people to bring a picnic, bring their children, meet friends and make new ones on Sunday June 10th.

“#liveablelimerick are working together with local residents, businesses, local groups, new and existing communities to bring Street Feast to the heart of Limerick City.”

Brian Leddin, a local resident has shared his excitement with the Street Feast idea, “Catherine Street has had a new lease of life in the last few years and it’s a great location for a city centre street party.” Mr Leddin said seeing the street full of people on the day would be “fantastic”.

Brian Leddin told the Limerick Post that he was involved in organising a similar event when he was living on Clancy’s Strand five or six years ago and “over the course of a few hours there were almost 200 people there. It was very simple and it worked really well.”

“One of the objectives is to demonstrate the alternative uses for street-space, to re-imagine it. At the moment, streets are very much car-dominated, as opposed to people dominated, we want to try to make a start at turning that around,” he added.

Liveable Limerick has been campaigning for a world-wide initiative to be brought to Limerick, known as Summer Streets or Sunday Streets, where some streets are closed to traffic on Sundays and quickly transformed into public space revealing the streets potential for other uses, such as picnics, dance, games, cooking, eating, a place to meet and connect.

Niki McMahon added “We see Street Feast, this year taking place on Catherine Street, as an opportunity for residents, local groups, local businesses, new and existing communities from across the city centre to come together and use the street as their very own public space. All you need is a picnic!”
