Limerick record label Out on a Limb celebrates 15 years

LIMERICK record label Out on a Limb will celebrate 15 years with a live all-day show at Dolan’s this Saturday June 9 from 4pm….all for just €10!

The label has put together a line up of a few label faves and some friends old and new. From alternative and noisy to hip hop and folk, the show features 15 acts of course.

Windings, The Spook of the Thirteenth Lock, Slow Riot, Proper Micro NV, Seabeasts, Shardborne, Mankyy presents: Jonen Dekay, Aswell & Gavin DaVinci and Naive Ted are just some of the exciting and eclectic acts.
Limerick Post chatted to OOAL’s Ciaran Ryan, this week. He couldn’t pick out just one highlight from the last 15 years of great music, but the celebrations the label did on their fifth and tenth birthdays were a standout.

While times are challenging for an indie label these days, with vinyl production costs getting higher for less of a return, Ciaran notes that music makers and their creativity today keeps Limerick’s music scene in rude health.

“I think music in Limerick is perhaps at its strongest that I can remember. Delighted that almost half the acts playing at Limerick based, and there were a few other asked who couldn’t do it for various reasons. Things are super healthy in Limerick with the likes of the acts playing Saturday, and also the likes of Pow Pig, Anna’s Anchor, Same D4ence, Van Panther, Fox Jaw, Zombie Picnic, Cruiser, Cassavetes and so on.”

“They’re all doing different and interest things. Hat tip to the folks at Music Generation who are working with the younger bands and showing us how it’s done.”

GROWING PAINS – 15 Years of Out On A Limb Records happens at Dolan’s this Saturday 9.
Earlier in the day there is a rockers-of-all-ages show at Steamboat Music from 2pm with King Pallas (aka Patrick O’Brien of Aindings) and Mún (new project of Adrian O’Connell).

?? Congrats Ciaran on terrific records and great shows – one standout moment for the label?

It’s very hard to pick out a highlight. There have been a lot more ups than downs, for sure. Lots of great friendships made, some great nights and it’s nice to have some small involvement in releasing what I feel is great music. We’ve done birthday shindigs for our 5th and 10th birthdays and they were real highlights that stick out

?? Fifteen years – a lot has changed in the music business – What is the big challenge today for an indie record company.

I think staying afloat is the big challenge. People are not buying physical music in the same volume they were when we started. There’s a lot of talk about the vinyl revolution but production costs are higher now for less of a return. But music and technology has to evolve so you need to learn how to adapt.

?? Judging by the long list of performers – There is no shortage of music being made in the city – True??

I think music in Limerick is perhaps at its strongest that I can remember. Delighted that almost half the acts playing at Limerick based, and there were a few other asked who couldn’t do it for various reasons. Things are super healthy in Limerick with the likes of the acts playing Saturday, and also the likes of Pow Pig, Anna’s Anchor, Same D4ence, Van Panther, looFox Jaw, Zombie Picnic, Cruiser, Casavettes and so on…there’s so many that I’m probably missing out on some genuinely kick-ass acts…sorry I don’t live in Limerick anymore so I’m probably not as up to speed!
