Woman rescued from River Shannon

A WOMAN is recovering in hospital after she was rescued from the River Shannon this Tuesday afternoon.

Just after 4.30pm on Tuesday, Limerick City Fire Service was mobilised by the Munster Regional Communications Centre (MRCC) to a report of a woman in her 30’s was in the River Shannon at the Lock Gates by Sarsfield Bridge.

Three appliances were mobilised from Mulgrave Street at 4.37pm along with the Fire Service’s Rescue Boat – FireSwift from Steamboat Quay.

On arrival, two specially trained SwiftWater Rescue Technicians SRTs entered the water and swam to the woman’s assistance.

Two passers-by and a Garda also assisted the woman before the Fire Services Arrival.

Limerick Marine also mobilised their Rescue boat and assisted with the rescue.

The woman was taken on board the Fire Service Rescue craft and was transferred to the pontoon at Sarsfield House and met by HSE Paramedics where she was treated for hypothermia.

The woman has since been brought to University Hospital Limerick for further assistance.
