LIMERICK-owned business Nevsail Watersports have started a petition to keep its enterprise afloat in the West Clare beach resort of Kilkee.
Nevsail has been operating in Kilkee successfully for 15 years by using the two beach huts on the popular horseshoe-shaped beach.
However, while Clare County Council has granted a licence to Nevsail for both beach huts for the 2019 season, from next year onwards only one of the huts will be available to them.
According to David Neville of Nevsail, this move will make it impossible for Nevsail to continue to operate its business successfully. He claims they simply can’t operate with one hut as they would not have enough space.
“The other most critical problem also being that Nevsail will not be able to take any group bookings, such as sports teams, work outings, school tours etc, as there are both males and female arriving to us who need a separate changing facility,” Mr Neville explained.
“Last week we alone, we had a school tour of 25 kids/teens that came for two days of activities with us, who then booked and stayed in Myles Creek guest house in Kilkee. These kids and teachers eat locally also.
“We also had a school tour of 56 kids, both girls and boys, and there is just no possible way to look after this size of a group of people with just the one hut. So we are in real trouble here,” he confessed.
Mr Neville went onto say that if Nevsail Watersports is not able to continue it could mean a serious loss of income, employment and services to the business.
“I believe the wider communities and businesses in Kilkee and County Clare would suffer too,” he concluded.
