Raise the Roof with a choir of angels

Musical director Malcolm Green, Sunday 26 at 3pm.

THE good people of Limerick Choral Union give freely of their talents this Sunday January 26 to conduct an afternoon concert for St Munchin’s Church Restoration  Fund (Clancy Strand).

At 3pm, musical director Malcolm Green leads the concert under the banner of ‘Raise the Roof’, both a nod to the soaring octaves of this oratorio choir and the expensive essential works required to keep the heritage treasure of the church in shape. €10 in plus raffle should help the mission.

Chairperson of LCU Lorraine McMahon speaks of a performance of  “choruses from Handel’s ‘Messiah’ together with some of much loved works of Mozart, Jenkins and Rutter.”

Some 80 choristers will assemble for this event with two short solos, from tenor Stephen O’Shea and Lorraine, soprano. “We are delighted to confirm musicians in support of the concert too. We have cellist Adrian Ivicevic, Hugh Cleary-Ward on timpani, Anne Cullen on piano and Heather Nash on trumpet.”

Jenkins’ ‘Arms and the Man’, Mozart’s achingly lovely ‘Lacrimosa’ and Rutter’s ‘For the Beauty of the Earth’ are in the mix along with the iconic ‘Hallelujah Chorus’.

Apparently a sum of €2mn is required to bring the church roof and other matters to right.
