Young Munster did their hopes of a playoff spot in All-Ireland League (AIL) Division 1A no harm after a 11-7 win over Garryowen in Dooradoyle last weekend.
Gearoid Prendergast’s side came out with what could be a vital victory from a game that was played in the most dreadful of conditions.
Jack Harrington’s first half try added to an earlier Evan Cusack penalty to give Munster’s an 8-0 lead at the end of a hotly contested opening 40 minutes. Cusack then stretched the lead further with an early second half penalty.
Garryowen fought back with a penalty try deep into stoppage time, but it came too late to mount a comeback.
Munster’s briefly moved into fourth place in the table, but Lansdowne’s win over Ballynahinch saw the Dublin side back into the playoff spots.
The Cookies welcome third placed UCD in their next game on March 14 and a win in that game could go a long way to securing a playoff place that the club crave.
Despite the defeat, Garryowen remain in second place. They make the trip to bottom placed Ballynahinch next time out.
Following the game, Prendergast spoke to Sporting Limerick and he said that he was really proud of his players after they pulled out such a win in dreadful conditions.
In Division 1B, Shannon’s promotion chances received a blow following an 18-0 loss to City of Armagh.
The defeat sees Tadhg Bennett’s side drop to third place in the table. Shannon trailled 13-0 at the break and things didn’t improve in the second half as they fell to their sixth defeat of the campaign.
Next up for Shannon is a home game against fifth placed Banbridge at Thomond Park’s back pitch.
Old Wesley leapfrogged them by virtue of a 29-5 win over Navan. A win over Banbridge could see Shannon return to second place in the table.
UL Bohs earned their fourth win of the season after seeing off Nenagh Ormond on a 10-0 scoreline.
Like the Munster’s v Garryowen fixture last Friday, this game was played in dreadful conditions. The sides were locked at 0-0 at half time, but Bohs managed to find some form in the second half.
A Mark Bromell try was converted by Harry Byrne and the latter made sure of the victory with a penalty. Bohs are situated in seventh place in the table ahead of their home game with Ballymena on March 14.
Old Crescent lost ground on the top three following a disappointing defeat to Queens University. They stay in the playoff places, but are now seven points off third placed Cashel.
Ronan McKenna converted his own try in the loss. They play top of the table MU Barnhall in their next game.
Bruff will still have relegation worries on their mind following a 24-7 loss to Skerries at the weekend in Division 2C.
The South Limerick side were underdogs going into the clash against the division leaders, but will be looking for a more positive result from their trip to Bangor in their next game.
