Following yesterdayโs announcement by government, the Irish Greyhound Board (IGB) has confirmed that all greyhound racingย activity has been suspended.
In a statement issued to the press, the IGB said:
This is to ensure full compliance with all directions of government and HSE protocols at this difficult time for all involved in the greyhound industry.
The IGBย hasย alsoย announced aย Covid-19 Greyhound Care Payment Schemeย to provide support for the care ofย racing greyhounds during the period that greyhound racingย remains suspendedย as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.
Aย payment of โฌ2 per day will be made in respect of each active greyhound currently registered on the IGBโs Racing Management System.ย This includes greyhounds that have raced or had an official trial at any IGB licenced greyhound track in the previous 42 days.ย The 42 days is part of the statutory racing regulation withinย which a greyhound is permitted toย trial/race.ย The 10% remittance to public trainers will continue toย applyย with respect to the greyhound care payment.
The scheme does not require any application by owners/trainers for theย special payment as this will automatically be processed on a fortnightly basis similar to the current arrangements for prize money payments.ย The scheme will come into effect fromย 8thย Aprilย 2020 when the final prize money payments have been made.ย The scheme will be reviewed after one month of operation and in the event that restrictions arising from the Covid 19 pandemic remain in place.
The IGB has also announced that following discussions with theย Irish Coursing Club (ICC)ย that the fee for registering new litters of greyhoundsย within 14 days of whelpingย will be waived.ย The IGB will recoup to the ICC the cost of this measure.ย This approach will ensure that an element of the costs associated with breeding activity will notย applyย during the current crisis.ย This will assist inย ensuring theย system forย breeding andย registeringย of greyhoundsย continues to be supported.
Irish Greyhound Board media statement on the suspension of racing & covid19 payment
Frank Nyhan, Chairman of the IGB, stated
โThe care and welfare of racing greyhounds remains a priority action for the IGB and the wider greyhound community.ย The current Covid-19 crisis has required theย suspensionย of racing activity which results in an income loss for those involved in the greyhound industry.
โThe purpose of theย Covid-19 Greyhound Care Payment Schemeย is to ensure that the care and welfare of greyhounds continues to remain a priority and that fundingย is available to the greyhoundย community to support the costs associated withย theย daily care of their greyhounds.
Iย ask all in the greyhound community to work together during the current crisisย and toย stay safeย by complying with all government advice and HSE protocols. I lookย forward toย theย resumption of greyhound racing as soon as isย possibleโ.
The IGB has confirmed that it has made its facilities and staff availableย to assist, where required,ย in support of the national effort to combat Covid 19.
