DARREN Moloney and his partner Jamie Kennedy had a tough call to make this week – to cancel or go ahead with their wedding.

And, despite having committed €20,000 to the celebrations, they took the responsible decision to postpone.

“Everyone was fantastic and willing to offer us alternative dates.  We spent two sleepless weeks trying to decide what to do,” Darren told the Limerick Post.

The couple, who live in Ballyneety, had set a date in August for a civil ceremony and a wedding party at the Woodstock Hotel in Ennis with 150 guests.

“In one way, we were lucky. Our date was in August, not next week but it was a real worry because we had paid for everything upfront and we had family coming from Los Angeles, Germany and the UK.

“We talked it over and we considered, what if flight restrictions were still in place, what if social distancing was still necessary?  Basically, part of the joy of a wedding is the run-up to it and we didn’t want to spend the next few months worrying instead of enjoying it.

“We talked to all the suppliers and after trying to find something that suited most people, we decided to postpone until February 27 next year.”

Jamie and Darren met two years ago on Tinder and had planned a honeymoon in the Catalonia region of Spain, also now postponed.

Darren (29) and Jamie (24) had a whirlwind romance and got engaged six months after they met.

“When you meet the right one, you know,” said Darren.

Darren works in healthcare recruitment and Jamie is a healthcare assistant, planning to study general nursing in September.

But they are still hoping that a holiday in Transylvania will go ahead in October.

Darren said that while it was a tough decision, “there are people facing much tougher situations out there. We’re both healthy and we both have jobs and are able to earn a living.

“Now we can look forward to our wedding and enjoy it.”
