Warning for users of debit cards in Limerick

Generally speaking, for online orders you are entitled to cancel for any reason within fourteen days of the receipt of the goods. You do not need to have a reason. You must cover the costs of returning the goods (although, often, online retailers will cover this cost).

THE increase in the ‘tapping’ limit to โ‚ฌ50 on debit cards has proved to be a bonus for opportunistic thieves and a nightmare for Limerick owners who lose cards.

Garda Nathan Crehane of Henry Street says that “unfortunately in the past few days, many injured parties have reported that after losing their debit cards, opportunistic fraudsters have carried out unauthorised transactions with these misplaced cards by tapping the cards in shops.”

The increase in limit means that anyone using the card could reap hundreds of euro worth of goods before the card owner even knows it’s gone.

“Do not wait a few days to see if it turns up, especially nowadays where you do not necessarily require the PIN number,” the garda said.
