Gardai issue 1,278 Covid-related fines in Limerick

LIMERICK gardai have issued a total of 1,278 covid related fines for various breaches of covid-19 regulations.

The information, released by An Garda Siochana, includes fines up to May 6th, for alleged breaches of the amended Health Act 1947, such as non-wearing of face coverings, attending events in dwellings, leaving home without a reasonable excuse, and international travel at airports and ports.

The Southern region had the most fines (6,157), with the majority of those issued in Cork (3,438), followed by Limerick (see above), Tipperary (553), Kerry (448), and Clare (440).

A total of 21,417 Covid-related fines were issued in the State. These include the Dublin Region (6,066), the North Western Region (5,013), and the Eastern region (4,181).

More men (74%) than women (26%) received fines and the majority were aged between 18 and 25 years.

According to gardai, all of the fines have been processed however only 46% have been paid with the remaining 47% unpaid or a court date issued.

The majority of the fines were issued on weekends and the highest amount of fines (7,106) were issued by gardai last February.

Gardai are responsible for policing the public health guidelines made under the Health Act 1947 and covid-related Fixed Payment Notices (FPNs) are recorded on the Fixed Charge Processing System (FCPS).
