Ryanair expands Shannon offering

FIANNA Fáil Spokesperson on Tourism and Aviation Cathal Crowe has welcomed the announcement by Ryanair this morning that it is to add six new routes at Shannon Airport, while also confirming it will base a second aircraft at the airport from this winter.

The budget airline made the €84 million announcement earlier, with 18 routes now confirmed for its winter schedule at Shannon.

“This is a significant boost for the region’s airport and one that is badly needed,” said Deputy Crowe.

“Shannon has suffered hugely over the past two years and the loss of the Aer Lingus base in May, in particular, was a massive blow.

“Ryanair’s decision to restore its second based aircraft at Shannon Airport demonstrates the commitment of this airline to Shannon and is a significant milestone in the road to recovery.

“I note that Ryanair and Shannon Airport are working closely together to ensure air traffic is rebuilt and restored to pre-pandemic levels, which is something we all need to row behind and help them achieve.

“It’s also extremely welcome to see not only that additional routes to existing destinations have been added to Ryanair’s schedule at Shannon, but new routes like Turin and Budapest taking off for the first time.

“I hope that the people of Clare and the people of the Midwest support our airport now and do all that they can to fly local when they are planning to go on holidays again.

“Shannon can thrive but it needs support from the ground up and from the government to do so.”
