Former Limerick FC man Will Fitzgerald Signs for Sligo

FORMER Limerick FC winger Will Fitzgerald has signed for Sligo Rovers ahead of the 2022 Airtricity League season.

The club announced the news this evening on their official Twitter account on the same day that Derry City announced that the talented youngster was leaving the Candystripes following one season with the club.

Sligo finished in 3rd position in the Airtricity League in 2021 under the guidance of Liam Buckley and it is an exciting move for the winger who will remain as a full-time player with the Bit O’Red. Fitzgerald made 35 appearances for Derry last season with 18 being substitute appearances. Manager Ruaidhri Higgins wished him well for the future upon the announcement.

“On behalf of everyone at Derry City I want to thank Will for his contribution this season and wish him well for the future”

Fitzgerald was delighted to sign for his new club and feels that one of the biggest factors was the style of football that Buckley employs at the Showgrounds. Speaking to the club’s official website, Fitzgerald stated:

“I feel there is something very exciting happening here. I just couldn’t say turn it down when I spoke with Liam. I had such a good feeling that I knew it was the right decision to sign. The main takeaway from the talks we had was the style of football, and the philosophy that Liam has, and that it will suit me perfectly.”

Buckley was equally happy to secure the signature of a player who he has kept tabs on for a couple of years.

“Will is a player who has been on my radar for a couple of years. I’m delighted we’ve been able to bring him to the club now. Will has so many great attributes. His crossing is excellent, he can run at players, he’s a great passer of the ball and overall he just has buckets of ability.”

Fitzgerald is now entering his fifth year in the League of Ireland with time being spent at Limerick FC, Waterford FC and Derry City.
