Key human rights role for Limerick senator

Limerick Sinn Féin Senator Paul Gavan

LIMERICK-based Senator Paul Gavan has been elected to the executive of a key European human rights committee.

The Sinn Féin politician was elected Vice President of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons at the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly earlier this week.

Senator Gavan has served as a member of the Committee since 2018 and has spoken out on a number of occasions on human right issues, especially with regard to the plight of refugees and migrants across Europe.

He has consistently called for greater action to stop the high number of deaths by drowning from dangerous and overcrowded vessels in the Mediterranean. He has also highlighted the rights of children detained in direct provision and immigration centres.
