Sophie O'Dwyer's winning painting, 'A school for everyone'

CARNANE Mixed National School in Fedamore is celebrating on the double this week after winning two of the top awards in the ‘Someone Like Me’ national art competition.

The County Limerick school was named both Junior and Senior County Winners competition, which will see them join over 40 other schools to compete for the national title at an online national awards ceremony on Thursday, February 3. 

The junior award was won by second class pupil Conor Power with his drawing showing people with different abilities playing a game of football with the caption ‘We are all part of the same team’.

Fourth class pupil Sophie O’Dwyer won the senior award for her painting of a group of school children standing in a circle joining hands with the slogan ‘ A school for everyone’

‘Someone Like Me’, which is organised by the National Disability Authority, attracted more than 1,800 entries from national schools across the length and breadth of the country. The competition has been designed to be a national celebration of the things that unite children of all abilities.

Over its six-year history, more than 8,000 children have taken part, helping to develop more positive attitudes towards persons with disabilities.
