Limerick’s Jade is making it all up

FANTASTICAL futuristic faces are the theme of a Limerick makeup artist’s contribution to a TG4 slot which invited participants to create the look we might all be wearing in the year 3,000.

26-year-old Jade Kiely from Caherdavin is a call centre worker in her day job, but she dreams of building a future career as a creative makeup artist.

Jade is one of the participants in the short series for BLOC TG4, which delves into the fascinating world of makeup to find out more about the Irish Make Up Artists (MUA) online community taking social media by storm.

The series is now available on BLOC TG4 Instagram and YouTube.

Jade got some of her earliest lessons in how to create a new face from her uncle, Shane Kiely, who has strutted the stage as Drag Queen, ‘Sharon Arseburn’.

“I loved to watch him doing makeup and he gave me a lot of tips about how to apply it and how to create a face,” said Jade.

“I became really interested in it and I’ve done a lot of special effects as well as the likes of hen night make up. It’s something I really love.”

Jade has created looks for fashion designers, including Colin Horgan, who has produced clothes for Lady Gaga and Little Mix. Jade did some of his looks for London Fashion Week.

For the TG4 slot, she was challenged to create a futuristic look and took up a theme “where people will have detachable faces and different looks that they can just put on or take off. It was inspired by a lot of robotic images and it was great fun”, explained Jade.

Ironically, the Caherdavin woman almost never wears makeup herself.

“If I’m getting done up for a night out or I’m demonstrating a look, I’ll put it on but the kind of heavy makeup I use for special effects and looks, your skin would not thank you for wearing it every day.”

Jade hopes to develop a career in film and special effects makeup, and is currently putting together a portfolio for that as well as her online work.

In the four-part series, viewers will find out what happens behind the camera lens, the Instagram filters and the TikTok collaborations as they get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at some of the most exciting upcoming Irish talent.
