THE University of Limerick have advanced to the final of the Electric Ireland Sigerson Cup as the team defeated DCU.

UL had failed to reach the final of the Sigerson Cup since 1997 but with the teams victory over DCU that has finally changed. It was a very close game between the two colleges. UL led the game going into halftime with a of score 0-7 to 0-6 in their favour.

After the break the teams were drawn at 0-11 each with less ten to play. David Clifford who has been a top performer slotted over a free kick to put the team ahead. UL would go onto score two more points opening a three point gap that they kept up until the final whistle.

UL will now have to face NUIG next Wednesday for the chance to finally come away with the Sigerson Cup.

UL forward and Minor All-Ireland winner with Kerry, Paul Walsh had nothing but praise for the teams preformance, when asked what does the win mean.

“Its massive for me and for all the team. I suppose UL don’t have a great history in this competition so it was important for all of us of all ages to try make an impact.

“It’s surreal UL haven’t been to the final for a long time. For everyone in the panel this has been what we have thought about ever since we lost to DCU in the league back in November. Ever since that game this has been our goal to beat DCU and to get into the Sigerson final”.

With Walsh starting the game from the bench, he spoke about the importance of making an impact when called upon.

“Obviously when your a sub you want to be playing but your told anytime you come on you cant just be lax and strolling around the place you have to make an impact. I suppose try get on the ball, try and make a few tackles, try to get yourself into the game as soon as you can.”

Up next for Walsh and co is NUIG next Wednesday and with Sigerson honours on the line, the forward admits it will be a huge battle to come home with a maiden title.

“Yeah it will be a great game obviously.

“Anyone who gets to the Sigerson final has a good team and anyone who gets into the Sigerson final is in good form also. They will be similar to us and it will be a titanic battle.”
