Limerick council charging €1,500 for a single grave

LIMERICK City and County Council has been asked to explain why they are now charging €1,500 for a single grave in their burial grounds.

The issue was raised by Fianna Fáil councillor Kevin Sheahan at this month’s Adare-Rathkeale Municipal District meeting.

He was told by Director of Service Nuala Gallagher that the price increase was applied after the council carried out a review of the charges for burial grounds in 2021.

“These charges had not been reviewed in the past six years. As as result of the review through scale of charges for 2022, the decision was made in December 2021 to increase charges to €1,500.

“Revenue from the sale of graves is used to support the operation and maintenance of the graveyard service,” Ms Gallagher explained.
