LCFE photographers win big at National Student Media Awards

TWO photography learners from Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board’s College of Further Education and Training, LCFE Mulgrave Street Campus are celebrating as they scooped top awards at the recent National Student Media Awards (Smedias) in Dublin.

Three learners from College of FET, LCFE Mulgrave Street Campus in Limerick were shortlisted in the Photography category this year, including Ciara Sheridan, Kate Harty and Gabriela Koscielniak. Gabriela went on to win Photographer of the Year, for her outstanding sample of photography. Kate Harty won News Photographer of the Year, which is awarded to the photographer best at capturing news events and current affairs on camera.
This brings the campus Photography Department’s tally of awards at the Smedias to an incredible tally of 13 since the competition’s inception.
Head of Creative Media at LCFE Mulgrave Street Campus, Eoin McCarthy, was thrilled with the results. He said: “This competition was the perfect opportunity for our learners to showcase their skills and these awards reward their hard work and passion for their art.”
Principal of LCFE Mulgrave Street Campus, Pat Maunsell, added: “This is a brilliant achievement for our learners and our teachers who inspire them. This is fantastic recognition of their talents and they clearly have bright futures ahead of them.”

Both Kate and Gabriela attended the opening of a special photography exhibition last Thursday evening, showcasing a selection of work from 1st and 2nd Year photography learners at the Belltable in Limerick. This year is a special one, marking 21 years of talent and passion from Photography Department learners at the LCFE, Mulgrave Street campus.
This year’s exhibition will run up to May 23 and is open to the public from 12pm to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. The show will then be transferred to LCFE Mulgrave Street Campus where it will become part of the inaugural ‘Annual Creative Media Showcase’, which opens on May 26.
