COUNTY Limerick Fine Gael councillor Stephen Keary has announced funding of €200,000 for a new surface to Knockfierna Hill from the R518 road to the start of the hill walk.

“This news has been welcomed by the local community, as it will serve as a fantastic amenity for those wishing to access Knockfierna and the farming community who use it on a regular basis. Work on this project is due to commence in the coming weeks.

The funding has been made available by Minister Heather Humphreys through the Department of Rural and Community Development,” Cllr Keary explained.

One of the county’s most popular hiking routes, Knockfierna is steeped in history from pagan times and old famine cottages are dotted all over the route.
