Electric scooters popular with Limerick thieves

ELECTRIC scooters are proving extremely popular for city travel but Limerick Crime Prevention Officer, Sergeant Ber Leetch has warned they are equally popular with thieves.

“It’s a case of supply and demand. Criminals know that they can sell these on easily for cash,” Sgt Leetch explained.

“One e-scooter was taken from a house in the Joseph Street area in the last week. Gardaí believe it is possible that the front door was not properly locked, as neither of the two residents heard a sound.

“Another e-scooter was left in the hallway of a house divided into apartments. The front door was left open, a criminal saw his chance and took the e-scooter.

“In both of these cases, the scooters were not locked. I know that the owners believed that they were safe as they were indoors but security is all about layering up,” Sgt Leetch said.

“Scooters and bicycles should be securely chained to an immovable object in the house or garage and the doors checked that they are locked and the alarm set before leaving the house unattended,” she added.
