Limerick Garda warning over fake €50 notes

GARDAÍ in Limerick are advising people to check their banknotes after reports of counterfeit €50 notes in recent weeks.

A service station in the city reported that on Saturday, December 17 at 3.25pm two women entered the shop attached to the station. They purchased some items and one of the women handed over two €50 notes.

“The staff did not realise that the notes were counterfeit and handed back change,” Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station Sgt Ber Leetch explained.

“There are scanners and pens that can check the notes to ensure that they are legal tender. I know bankcards and tapping has replaced a lot of cash but clearly it is still important to check notes.”
